UnBreaking by L.D. Waters
Fantasy, the Fae, Romance, Novella, New Adult
Emerald eyes watched me. His deep, husky voice rumbled across the forest, caressing my ears.
“Do you not wish to come out and play, darling?”
Time is a deceptive mistress. Nineteen-year-old Zurilya has learned this the hard way.
After a wish for a happily ever after goes terribly wrong, Zurilya is trapped in a caricature of a hateful marriage. With her five-hundred-year anniversary looming over her neverending existence, she’ll do anything to break the curse.
During a rare celestial event, where Fae venture into the human realm, Zurilya sets out to hunt the Fae that granted her the “gift.” She meets the handsome and seductive trickster, Calstar, but he is unable—or unwilling—to help. To force his hand, Zurilya magically binds him to her in an unbreakable vow. What forms is deeper than she ever expected.
She first finds the arrogant peacock not worth a second thought. But as she gets to know the cunning Fae, she discovers a darkness lurking behind his dashing smile.
They say time heals all wounds, but can love heal the damage caused by time?
Review:
Zurilya has made her bed and unfortunately, it is not the bed she wishes she had. In the past, Zurilya was selfish, using a wish given to her by a Fae to further her selfish happiness. This backfires spectacularly when she and Emillion are given immortal lives as King and Queen. This lands her in a terrible situation with a King who hates her and blames her for everything in his life. Zurilya believes that the only way to fix things is to recapture the Fae that gave her the wish and reset what was wrong to be righted. But things in the Kingdom are not as well as they think, the Fire Rebellion sees both she and Emillion as the enemy, and Mattias (I hope I spelled his name right) has his own selfish want from the Kingdom.
Zurilya comes across as really not a likable character. She is selfish and does not realize what her wish has done until she finds that her husband prefers the company of other women to her own. She finds this whenever she goes to see him. He is either having sex or finding ways to gain pleasure from the women who flaunt themselves at her. She even meets an Ash Fae through one of these meetings. Zurilya manages to convince her to help her find to call the Fae that helped her back. What she does not tell Ari is that she plans to bind the Fae to her.
I felt sorry for Ari because she believed that Zurilya was just looking for help. What she did not realize is what Zurilya planned until it was too late. I could understand her anger at Zurilya because she believed her, believed that the help Zurilya would get could send her in the direction of the needed help.
Zurilya does grow up a bit but that isn't really toward the end. I had a really hard time liking her and I understood why Emiilion did what he did. And you do learn why his hatred for her is so palpable.
I had been waiting for this book to come out and honestly, I was not disappointed by the book. I was captivated from the moment the first page to the very end. The only thing is that Zurilya is such an unlikable character. I could not find any way to connect to her. All I saw was how selfish she was.
I did love the images. I wish there had been so many more of them. It gave a nice touch to a few scenes.
This book is a nice short novella especially if you are looking for something you can devour within a short period.
