Just as Clara and her sister are settling into their new life, Drosselmeyer sends a desperate message to the Seelie Court. With Lir and Louisa occupied elsewhere, Clara and Finias (the Sugarplum Faerie) have no choice but to respond and forge deep into Unseelie Territory, where a cruel Queen, known as the Eater of Hearts, has taken the throne. As they infiltrate the Court of Dread, Finias and Clara are forced to keep their relationship a secret. Meanwhile, the ravenous victims of the Queen, called the Heartless, turn the Unseelie kingdom into a far more dangerous place than usual.

Brimming with drama, horror, and spice, this sequel to "A Court of Sugar and Spice" brings back Clara and Finias, while introducing new characters like the fiendishly hot Cheshire Cat, the enigmatic Rabbit, the terrifying Queen, and more.

Review:

A Court of Hearts and Hunger is the second book in the series titled, Wicked Darlings, with a dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland. Sisters Clara and Louisa have settled into their new lives in the Seelie Court. Blissful. Happy lives. That is until Clara receives a message from her godfather, Drosselmeyer, who witnessed his maid, Alice, being taken from the grounds of his home by the White Rabbit along with a powerful book. As Clara and Finias set out to rescue Alice and the book, they must navigate the Unseelie Realm where a heart-eating queen sits on her throne and her heartless beings roam the lands.

Since I started this series, I have come to love Clara and her Sugarplum Faery. I love their devotion to each other. The Sugarplum Faery is so protective of her that he will leave Alice and the book to their fates. He doesn't want anything to happen to Clara and that is the devotion anyone would desire.

Also, I love that we have Alice and she is quite inquisitive which sets her apart from the other humans the White Rabbit has brought to his lair and I think this slightly disarms him in a way. And then there is the Chesire cat, quite the bonus character. I love both of them.

I have come to enjoy this series. It's fresh. It's different from all the other dark romances. It offers us retellings of our favorite stories with a dark, smutty twist that will keep you superglued from the first page to the last. Ms. Kenney's characters are complex, with layers that are slowly peeled back throughout the story, making them feel more real and intriguing. The steamy scenes are incredibly well-written and have just the right amount of heat to keep you hooked. I can't wait to see what other twisted tales Ms. Kenney has in store for us in the future.

Meanwhile Louisa and the Nutcracker Prince battle and bicker over everything, despite the growing attraction between them. This is a spicy, adult, fantasy romance retelling of "The Nutcracker" fairytale.

Review:

A Court of Sugar and Spice is a spicy retelling of the beloved tale The Nutcracker. The story is told from the dual points of view of sisters Louisa and Clara. After the death of their father, the girls are sent to their godfather, Drosselmeyer, to live. But the girls start to realize that there is more to the dolls in his home. One night, Louisa's finger is pricked by a splinter and her blood awakens the nutcracker. When the girls learn of his curse and his plight to return to his home, they offer their help determined to get the cursed prince to the pool that would help end his curse. Upon their arrival, they find the Unseelie army led by the Rat King has taken over the Kingdom. Add a deliciously seductive Sugarplum Faerie into the mix and you have a delightful and smutty retelling.

I found myself mildly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. This is the first book I have come across with a unique retelling of The Nutcracker. The characters and world-building are beautifully crafted with a determination to draw the reader in and keep them glued to the edge of their seats by investing their emotions into the characters and their world.

The only downside to this book was Louisa. I don't know why but I just did not like her character. She seemed to be too pushy when it came to sex especially when the prince's mind had been on returning to his original self and saving the kingdom. I get that she enjoyed sex but I did not like how her entire character seemed to revolve around it. I often found myself skipping any of her scenes in favor of Clara and Fin.

Who would NOT want to spend more time with Fin and Clara, especially the chase, the rescue, and the hot smut scenes? Louisa and Lir did not have that type of chemistry as the former did. It was there hot and steamy and I was there for it happily.

Final Thought:

This book exceeded my expectations. I loved everything about this book and I am quite looking forward to reading the next one in the series. It was a truly enjoyable read that I didn't want to put down. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys well-developed characters and immersive world-building that will keep you turning the page.

Captain Pan (Neverland Fae #2) by Rebecca F. Kenney

Fantasy, Romance, Retellings, Peter Pan, Adult, Fae, Fairytales, Pirates, Monsters, Spicy Romance, Contemporary, Folklore, Fairies

Wendy has been kidnapped and taken to Hook, which escalates tensions between Hook and Peter. As Wendy plans her own escape, Peter tries to figure out where she's being held and how he can rescue her without losing his friends, his allies, and Neverland itself.

(Trigger warning: violence, nonconsensual touch/kissing, threat of rape)

Review:
This book is the conclusion to the book Wendy, Darling and it picks up where the last book has left off. Wendy has been kidnapped and taken to Commodore Hook and placed into his hands. He plans to use her once again against Pan and maybe even keep her once he has rid himself of the pesky fae. But Hook is attracted to Wendy and often finds a way to gain a kiss, a touch, or have her naked before him. What he is not aware of is that Pan is not going to let the former Captain keep his beloved Wendy. Everything is at stake including Neverland, and the clock is ticking to find where Hook has hidden his beloved.

I have never been one to pick up the sequel once I read the first book. I tend to pick up other books before I come back to the sequel but this one really caught my attention and I wanted to see the direction it took. I loved how we are able to see glimpses of other worlds. And let's not start with this Alice - she was freakin' creepy and I mean really creepy. The Hook and Wendy dynamic was quite yum that there were parts where I was actually wishing this book was not geared toward the Wendy/Pan pairing. I always did enjoy the whole villain gets the girl. Those types of stories are the best. But I was happy with glimpses of what might have been here and there.

The only grip I had against this book was the Pan-Hook finally meeting was just anticlimactic. It just made the build-up to the story feel like the author was trying to hurry through the ending to get rid now of the smex. Don't get me wrong we were long overdue for the reunion of Wendy and Pan, but I felt it took away from everything. There was a missed opportunity to make the whole Pan-Hook showdown worth waiting for and just to have it dropped in a way made me feel like maybe I should have skipped this book for another day. This was just a disappointment to me.

I will say I enjoyed this series and I am definitely going to pick up the other books that are off-branches to the story because it's Greek/Roman mythology and if you want to reel me into it, then you just have to wave that sort of thing in my face. LOL.

Wendy, Darling (Neverland Fae #1) by Rebecca F. Kenney

Retellings, the Fae, Fantasy, Romance, Spice, Magic, Fairytales, Peter Pan, Mermaids, Monsters, Pirates

A grown-up and depressed Peter Pan is fighting to protect Neverland from the realm-conquering Commodore Hook. When Peter's runaway shadow shows up at Wendy's workplace, she's eager for the chance to visit Neverland again, to help protect it--and sure, to see the Fae man she's been in love with for ten years. But Neverland is far different than Wendy remembers, with monsters both literal and human-shaped threatening everything Peter has tried to build.

Review:
I love retellings of Disney classics that veered off from the stories we loved and cherished to being geared to the adult within. I have seen Beauty and the Beasts, Cinderella, and some Snow White but never on Peter Pan, and this grown-up version is definitely up my alley. It's different and has the right amount of spice if you are not ready for the heavier version of this tale.

Wendy Darling has grown up. She has moved out of her parents' home and begin working as an IT. Her brothers have refused to believe that their adventure in Neverland was real and that it was just a dream. But Wendy knows differently. She knows that their adventure was real and nothing was going to change her opinion. One day, Peter's shadow returns and Wendy knows something is wrong. Even more, Peter appears. Gone has been the boyish fae that could hold his own against his enemies and in place is an older version of the Peter she remembered - tall, muscular, and handsome. Peter has come to retrieve his shadow and he has no intentions of taking Wendy back with him, but Wendy knows something is wrong in Neverland and she wants a chance to help. Peter is not happy at all with this. In his mind, she left him and he has held a grudge against her for it. There is also a new Mother and she is doing her best to plant doubt in Peter's head. Then, there is Commodore Hook - Captain Hook no longer - is taking over the realms and Peter and Wendy must find a way to stop him.

Okay, I loved this book. I loved every bit of this book. The spice is just right. It is not too hot but just enough spice to not oversaturate the novel. Seeing the characters grown-up surprised me but I was happy to see them. I loved that Neverland was not the same as we saw when they were children that there were real monsters and these monsters were not fluffy, but a real threat. And the crocodile! I was so happy to see her/him! And she has a name! I am looking forward to seeing Hook and how everything comes together.

The Sea Witch: A Little Mermaid Retelling (For the Love of the Villain, #1) by Rebecca F. Kenney

Sypnosis
When Averil saves a young man from a shipwreck, she thinks she feels the Soul Echo--the sign that the young human male is her one true mate. And the malevolent Sea Witch is all too happy to offer a deal that could make all her dreams come true. He wants her to win the prince's heart--even coaches her in the art of seduction. But what is the real price of the Sea Witch's help? Why is he more brutally beautiful--and charming--than Averil expected?

[TW/CW: age gap between fantasy characters, violence, abuse, torture, murder, sexual threat, self-harm, explicit intimacy/spicy scenes, inexperienced/virgin female main character]

Review:
This version is not your sweet little retelling of a Disney classic. No, this version is dark and spicy with a male sea witch and a mermaid named Averil, who believes the prince she has saved is her heart's true mate. The only way for sure she is to know is to head to the surface and be with him and she must bargain with the Sea Witch of the sea in order to do so. With bargains made and Averil finally able to gain legs to be on land and with her prince, Averil finds that she could be wrong in her assessment of the prince and even more that the handsome Sea Witch is causing all sorts of changes in her feelings that make her even more uncertain of her heart.

I don't remember where I caught sight of this book. I can say it was not Book Tok because I had not seen it pop up there and if it had, I must have missed it somewhere lost within the many videos of reviews. I have always enjoyed books where the villain gets the girl. You may find them aplenty within the dark romances, but there are few that stand out. This book held my interest from the first page until the very last. I loved the characters, world-building, and storyline. It may have followed some of the storylines for The Little Mermaid, but it pretty much ends there. There are darker themes and sexual tension felt from the very beginning between Zoltan and Averil.

I love the twists this book brings. It is different and a quick read for anyone looking for something that won't overwhelm you. From what I have seen, this book is the first in a series. I don't know how many books are projected to be in this series, but nevertheless, I am looking forward to seeing how each one is.
