There's a monster living in my house.
I can't see it, but I hear it. Creeping around at night, shuffling through my things, and digging through my trash. It fixes the leaks in my roof, snuffs out the candles it doesn't like, and only occasionally growls at me from under the bed. But then the dreams start... and they're a little too real. The Monster is doing things to me. And I don't know if I like it or not.
And then I learn what it is. Noćnamora. Dream Walker. Nightmare.
I live in the house of The King of Nightmares... and he wants me as his pet.
This is an urban fantasy romance with horror elements. Please check the author's note before proceeding with the book.
Review:
When Ava buys herself a home, she does not expect it to come with a Monster living under her bed. Nor one that calls her Lovely and does the house cleaning. Ava finds herself learning to co-exist with her Monster and being drawn to him.
So, how do I get a Monster like this? Honestly, I loved Luce. He was quite the gentleman - or do we call him a gentlemonster? Nevertheless, he is the Monster I never thought I could want in my life. He helped her keep house, protected her, and pulled away all those nightmarish dreams from her past. I don't care if he is supposed to be a terrifying monster with razor-sharp teeth and tentacles, I would love to have him in my life.
Ava is a strong female lead. She has been through a lot and is just looking for a place to call her own. She does not expect a Monster to live beneath her room but she does accept it without thought. I also loved the banter the two of them had over the candles. I found that funny. As a candle lover myself, I don't think I would appreciate my favorite flavor of candles being sniffed out without reason. LOL
Now, there is a downside to this novella. It was short. Very short. We get a small history of the trouble between Luce and a mage but we don't see it. In fact, his return seemed to be a bit anti-climactic. I would have loved to have been given an exploration of the past...of their discord...how the mage was able to gain access once again to Luce...and everything in between. It made the story fall extremely flat and disappointing.
Despite this, I am hoping to see a bit more of the supernatural community. I think there is a lot of room to expand on this world and I am hoping we see more of it, especially Luce and Ava.
Final Thought:
If you are looking for a nice short read, this book is definitely something I recommend you pick up. It is quick, the characters are fun, and the storyline is nice and sweet.
