Ashes to Glass by Carmen Black
Sypnosis
One upon a time there was -
A charming prince.
Two wickedly cruel step brothers.
And a pair of magical glass slippers.
But this isn’t the story you know.
Because in my story, love comes at a price.
And when it comes time for that price to be paid,
I find out that the prince, as well as my step brothers, all want a piece.
A piece of me.
Review:
This is the first book by this author that I have read and I must say I loved it. Then again, I really enjoy a lot of retellings especially when they have to do with fairytales. This is my first retelling of Cinderella that I really loved.
This retelling is a far different tale than the Cinderella we know. This is a steamy romance filled with a handsome prince and two step-brothers that want her just as badly as the prince. Rosella is our Cinderella forced into the role by her Stepmother, who sees the girl beneath her feet. With her husband gone, she makes sure Rosella's role is that of a servant instead of being treated as an equal. In place of the step-sisters that are normally in any Cinderella story, you get two step-brothers. They treat Rosella horribly and Rosella has no feelings for either of them, but that changes. A visiting prince becomes enamored by Rosella and one of her step-brothers begins to have an interest in her.
But there is trouble on the grounds of Rosella's home. Her livestock is being killed. And a creature has become interested in her. Her step-brothers believe there is a wolf behind it all but Rosella isn't convinced.
Until one night when the palace holds a ball in honor of the prince. Her Stepmother thaws any chance for her going. As Rosella wallows in her misery, a "Fairy Godmother" appears and gives her a pair of glass slippers that change her into a beautiful creation. But the "Fairy Godmother" warns Rosella that the shows must come off before midnight. She gives no further information only shoos off Rosella to the ball.
From there, things get sticky and a Stepmother decides that those beautiful shoes should be hers.
I loved this book. I loved the characters and the world they live in. Henrik was not entirely an asshole. He did what he could to protect her and that becomes obvious when he is told to give her lashes. He doesn't do that. This is our first glimpse that Henrik has some feelings for her. As for Edmund, I didn't really see any change in his demeanor, but that is until we learn that whatever his older brother wants, he has to have too. The whole sharing of Rosella is delicious. I want to be in her shoes. I want to have a harem of two stepbrothers and a prince.
I saw that there is another book coming in this series and I cannot wait to see what the author brings to the next book. I know it won't be out until next year but I CANNOT WAIT SO LONG. I NEED THAT BOOK LIKE RIGHT NOW! I WILL GIVE THE AUTHOR MY SOUL FOR THE NEXT BOOK!
