Orphaned at a young age, Layla Llewellyn feels like the luckiest girl in the world after she moves in with her uncle Bill, a gardener who lives on the scenic Arvis estate in the Berg Empire. To Layla, Arvis seems like paradise; she loves to explore the vast forest, always bringing her notebook to record the wildlife she encounters. She especially loves the birds, watching them with awe as they hatch and grow from fluffy chicks into beautiful birds. Duke Herhardt, the young, handsome lord of Arvis, is also interested in birds—and in Layla. But the difference, is he's interested in birds because he likes to hunt them... and he's interested in Layla because he likes to make her cry. If a lovely bird is trapped in a golden cage, which will she choose: a life of luxury, or freedom?
Review:
I am not going to sugar-coat this book when I say the male lead is a huge walking black flag because he really is. There is no way of putting it. Matthias expects perfection in his world, and he does not like the idea of anything displacing it. Enter Layla. She messes up his perfect world. No duties hold her down like those that hold down Matthias. And this causes Matthias to want her. While there could have been times he could have stepped in, he doesn't. He doesn't want Layla happy. He wants her tears, and the more she gives, the happier he becomes with them.
A lot of people don't like the ML, and I can understand, but you also have to understand the time period where women were objects (unfortunately, that seems to be the case in a lot of manhwas and manhuas) and treated as such. This was also the case, but again, this doesn't excuse Matthias's behavior.
I really enjoyed this book, and I am probably the handful that did. I will admit there were times I wanted to shake Layla awake, and there were times I wanted to drown Matthias. Still, it is a good read.
The manhwa isn't finished, and it is currently on hiatus.
