The conclusion to the Cat and Mouse Duet is here...

The Diamond

Death walks alongside me,
But the reaper is no match for me.
I'm trapped in a world full of monsters dressed as men, and those who aren't as they seem.
They won't keep me forever.
I no longer recognize the person I've become,
And I'm fighting to find my way back to the beast who hunts me in the night.
They call me a diamond,
But they've only created an angel of death.

The Hunter

I was born a predator,
With ruthlessness ingrained in my bones.
When what's mine is stolen from me in the night,
Like a diamond hidden within a fortress,
I find that I can no longer contain the beast.
Blood will paint the ground as I tear apart this world to find her.
And bring her back to where she belongs.
No one will escape my wrath,
Especially not those who have betrayed me.

Review:

Before I begin this review, let me start by prefacing this by ensuring you read the trigger warning list before this book. It contains heavy themes of kidnapping, sex trafficking, violence, and sexual assault, all of which are portrayed in a very intense and disturbing manner. While these elements are central to the plot of the book, they may disturb the viewer.

The first book was okay, don't get me wrong. It was nothing stellar like many other dark romances, but it had its following. I thought the second book would be another book I just might enjoy in the duet. WRONG. My experience with Hunting Adeline was different. The story delved into extremely dark and sensitive territory, and for me, it crossed lines that made the reading uncomfortable. The portrayal of certain scenes and themes felt problematic and deeply troubling on so many levels. I just could not stomach the book anymore. I just ended up DNFing it.

Will I read anything further from this author? Maybe, I don't know. Phantom looks promising but after this one, I might just be wary of her books for now.

The Manipulator

I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.
I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.
But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave.
He's always there, watching and waiting.
And I can never look away.
Not when I want him to come closer.

The Shadow

I didn't mean to fall in love.
But now that I have, I can't stay away.
I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.
The way she undresses...
I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.
And once she is, I'll never let her go.
Not even when she begs me to.

While not required, it is highly suggested to read the novella, Satan's Affair, first.

This book was previously banned on Amazon due to the trigger warning. Please read reviews or go to the author's website.

Review:

Red flags, red flags everywhere when it comes to Zane, but do I care? Maybe. I had already had a slight glimpse of him during Satan's Affair, so I was already expecting his unending stalking, breaking into her home to leave a rose, or banging on her door when she had male guests over even going as far to kill them for daring to touch her. If this had been real life, I would have probably been appalled by the blatant disrespect he has shown to her, but this is a book, not real but I know that there are people out there that may have gone through something similar. All the more reasons to avoid this book altogether.

Addie is a writer who can weave a tale to captivate an audience. Just recently, her grandmother left her a beautiful home but it also holds a mystery - a mystery that led to the death of her great-grandmother, Gigi. During her renovations, she comes across Gigi's journal and sets out to solve the mystery, but Addie has a stalker that has started showing up. A dark figure broke into her home and left her a single rose without a single thorn.

Zade is the owner of Z, an organization a bit similar to Anonymous that sets out to find human trafficking victims and reunites them with their families or save them from an abusive situation. It is during one afternoon when he comes across Addie signing her books that his obsession begins with her.

I noticed that with many dark romances, this trope seems to be the favorite - an obsessive alpha male and a Stockholm female lead. Most female leads start off as badass and can literally make themselves less dependent on the male, but that seems to change when the alpha male appears and suddenly the female becomes the sudden damsel in distress. It always feels that the female character goes backward in evolution instead of growth. This is what I felt like with Addie. I wanted to see her grow but she doesn't. She continues to encourage the stalking.

I have had this book on my TBR. There had been many praises for this book on BookTok and I had seen it praised elsewhere but other book community influencers. Although I did enjoy this book, I am on the fence with the characters. Zane has so many red flags but don't all males have these in the dark romance genre?

Final Thought:

Will I be reading book two? Of course. I want to see how this story is tied up in two books.

Every Halloween, Satan's Affair will come to you.

We travel the country, offering terrifying haunted houses, thrilling rides and the tastiest food. And with every passing town, I cleanse this world, one execution at a time.

I hide within the walls, casting my judgement for those that reek of evil, singing lullabies to their rotting souls.

Once you've been chosen, there's no escaping my henchmen—they cater to my every desire.

You can run and you can hide, but it only excites me.

Come.

Take a walk through my dollhouse, where your screams will blend and your cute little pleas will go unanswered.

But I can't promise it'll be over quickly...

One, Two Freddy's coming for you
Three, Four Better Lock Your Door

Sibby and her henchmen-cum-lovers Mortis, Timothy, Jackal & Cronus are part of a traveling Halloween fair called Satan's Affair during the fall months. Contained within the Halloween scaretractions of haunted houses, small thrill rides, and plenty of food to enjoy, Sibby's little dollhouse waits for the one rotten soul to enter her domain. Those with rotten souls can enter but they are never allowed to escape. Not when Sibby has her beloved knife ready to hack up these demons. Sibby gets off on these killings and once the demon has been taken care of, she enjoys quite an orgy of sex with her minions. As the Halloween fair goes from town to town, Sibby continues her work to destroy the rotten-smelling souls that enter her attraction. It is even during this one night Zade makes his appearance.

Five, Six Grab Your Crucifix
Seven, Eight Gonna Stay Up Late

Ah, Freddy Kreuger. A favorite of mine. I can see why Sibby would recite the poem when she is so nearly his female counterpart. Of course, without being able to kill people in their sleep. Sibby really went through hell as a child especially being in such a cult of her father's own making. So, I felt really sorry for her. I felt even more emotional attachment to her when it came to her mother. The one person she loved more than anything. I want to say that the mother endured a lot to protect her children and perhaps more Sibby than the others. They were, after all, already brainwashed. Maybe it was the reason why she did not protect them as much (perhaps she even tried at one point but their brainwashing had become too bad for her even to reach them).

Sibby's emotions were a rollercoaster. I don't want to give off too much of a spoiler to the book, but the last chapters of the book were rather interesting and something I was not sure I expected. But then this book was not entirely something I expected in the first place. LOL.

And let us not forget that this book introduces us to Zade. Now, I have not read the Cat and Mouse Duet. I have it set to be on my July TBR. So, I am looking forward to that.

As for the blood, gore, and sex. This book won't be the first and won't be the last that I have read with that combination.

Nine, Ten Never Sleep Again

Will I be reading more of her? I plan to next month. Zade has made me curious about him so I will definitely be checking out his own duet.
